Houston Zoo Headquarters & Parking Garage
Project Overview
The Houston Zoo Headquarters brought the zoo’s staff together in a new five-story office building alongside a five-story parking structure, adding visitor parking for one of Houston’s most popular destinations. Contract Fabricating Services fabricated and installed the steel for the project, as part of a team whose work was recognized with ENR’s 2024 Best Project award for Texas and Louisiana.
Our Scope
- 200+ feet of guardrails and handrails, including garage barrier rails
- Embeds, bollards, pipe protectors and miscellaneous metals
- Field installation: our crews installed steel on a tight urban site within an operating zoo.
The Challenge
Few jobsites are as sensitive as a working zoo. The site sat beside the Texas Medical Center with no dedicated laydown area, so steel had to arrive just in time and go straight into place. Zoo operations, including animal food deliveries, continued throughout construction, and crews had to control dust and noise to protect animals nearby. Crane work was coordinated around Memorial Hermann Life Flight helicopter traffic overhead.
The Result
An award-winning, LEED Gold headquarters delivered for the Houston Zoo. Our performance led to continued work across the zoo campus, including the West and North administration building renovations. In total, we have delivered more than $900,000 in steel at the Houston Zoo.
