The Sterling Group: Monostringer Feature Stair
Project Overview
For The Sterling Group’s Houston office, Contract Fabricating Services fabricated and installed a custom monostringer feature stair connecting two floors through a new opening in an existing building. A single central spine carries each flight, with the treads appearing to float on either side. The result is a clean, modern focal point for the office.
Our Scope
- Monostringer stair: Heavy plate steel center stringers carry two flights, with welded tread support brackets cantilevering from each side of the spine.
- Intermediate landing: A steel-framed landing joins the two flights and ties back to the existing building structure.
- Plate treads: Steel treads are set on the cantilevered brackets, ready for the finish material.
- Field fit-up and welding: Our crews completed the assembly, welding, and grinding on site. The stringers were spliced in place so the stair could be brought into the building in sections.
The Challenge
A monostringer stair puts all the load on a single spine, so every weld and splice is critical and the alignment has to be exact. Building it inside an existing office raised the difficulty further. Heavy stringer sections had to come into the building in pieces, be spliced in place, and be fit around existing fireproofed beams, a concrete column, and active trades working overhead. The finished stair then had to land precisely within a new slab opening.
The Result
A sculptural, open stair that gives The Sterling Group a connected workspace and a signature architectural feature. Paired with the Argus Media stair, it shows our growing track record in high-end interior feature stairs for Houston’s corporate offices.
