Ally Bank: Suspended Feature Stair
Project Overview
For Ally Bank’s Lewisville office, Contract Fabricating Services fabricated and installed the steel structure for an open-riser feature stair connecting the ground floor to the level above. The stair’s signature element is a floating intermediate landing hung from the building’s structure on steel rods, which leaves the space beneath completely open and makes the stair read as a sculptural element in an industrial-modern interior.
Our Scope
- Feature stair structure: Two flights of heavy steel stringers with open-riser tread supports, built to receive finish treads.
- Suspended intermediate landing: A steel-framed landing carried by hanger rods from the overhead structural beams, with no supporting posts below.
- Connections to existing structure: The upper flight ties into the edge of the floor opening, and the hanger rods connect to the steel framing above.
- Field installation: Our crews fit, aligned, and welded the stair on site, then set and tensioned the hangers to bring the landing to final elevation.
The Challenge
A suspended landing is unforgiving. The hanger rods, overhead beams, both flights, and the floor connections all had to line up precisely, because the landing’s position is set by its hangers rather than adjustable posts. Everything had to finish plumb and level to finish-grade tolerances, since the open design leaves the steel exposed to view. And it was all done more than 200 miles from our Houston shop, so fabrication had to be right before the steel left the yard.
The Result
A clean, open stair that serves as the centerpiece of the space, with a landing that seems to float in midair. The project shows our ability to deliver architectural steel with complex load paths, and to support partners on projects across Texas with the same precision we bring at home.
